Virtual Reality

  • Virtual reality is the example of multimedia technology which uses non-linear interactivity.
  • Advanced virtual reality systems allow users to respond and interact in many ways to its virtual surroundings.
  • In Geography, virtual reality can recreate places and enviroment for we to interact with. Viewing exploration programs, like Discovery and Animal Planet will be even more interesting.
  • This is because we will be able to enter different environments virtually and interact with surroundings. We can learn at our own pace and level of understanding.

Differences linear & non-linear interactivity

Linear Interactivity

  1. user interacts with the multimedia application without controlling the progress of the content.
  2. user is a passive receiver.
  3. the linear content is arranged in sequence.
  4. ex: movie
Non-Linear Interactivity
  1. two-way communication
  2. user can control the progress and sequence of the multimedia content by using buttons or links.
  3. uses tools like hypertext or hypermedia to connect different media to another screen.
  4. ex: electronic book
